To confuse things a lot of the early model 22 rifle manufactured after 1940 do not even use the letter code. after the war some shotguns did not have serial number at all only the letted code for year of manufacture and starting about 1968 everthing was just one series with letter code (for year of manufacture). Harrington and Richardson along with Massachusetts spelled out on top of barrell with a Patent date of Nov 8 1895. After looking at what I typed, I realized I gave the wrong first 3 digits. that is why there were some many low serial numbers with the letter code. Didnt think we should use all of a serial number. in the beginning (1940) some firearms continued their individual serial number series and some times a letter code was added and some times not, but most didn't.īy the early 1940's around 1942 or so serial number were assigned yearly to handguns, rifles & shotguns.
